In keeping with UMCom's dedication to innovation, it was only fitting that the agency kicked off our 2024 with an AI staff training presentation. The training was led by Rev. James Lee, Director of Communications of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference, who emphasized that AI tools won’t replace humans but enhance their capabilities. He also highlighted that AI tools can help overcome language barriers, improve accessibility and help employees spend more time on what matters.
The training covered topics such as the end of writer’s block, treating AI as a book-smart but not a street-smart intern and the importance of conversing with AI regularly to enhance its learning to aid you in the future.
The day included a session on the future of innovation, led by Ashley Gish, who shared insights on the importance of receiving employee insights, setting a digital literacy baseline, skill-building opportunities and developing a UMCom AI policy.
Though staff came into the training on various spectrums of experiences with AI use, afterwards the majority of attendees felt optimistic about the potential positive impact of AI tools in our ministry. As we plan for how to meet the needs of the UMC now and in the future, we must think proactively to be prepared in an everchanging communications landscape.
