The word bishop comes from the Greek word for “overseer.” From the early days of the church, bishops have been key figures connecting local congregations to the larger Body of Christ. Today, United Methodist bishops provide oversight to Annual Conferences, appoint pastors and other church offices, preside over conferences, and serve on church boards and commissions. To support the essential ministries of the bishops, The United Methodist Church established the Episcopal Fund which pays for the salary and expenses for all bishops in the denomination. The Episcopal Fund is paid for by the apportionments of local congregations.
