A Moment for Mission

One of United Methodism’s seven apportionments, the General Administration Fund covers expenses of the General Conference, the Judicial Council and the administrative functions of the General Council on Finance and Administration, operating costs for the General Commission on Archives and History and maintenance of historic shrines, landmarks and sites. It funds the safeguarding of our denomination’s legal interests and rights and the managing of The United Methodist Foundation. The fund was established as part of the financial plan of The Methodist Church at its unification in 1939.
Every day, the General Council on Finance and Administration supports you in your ministry. One way is through online resources like “The Collaborator.” Through this newsletter, GCFA shares financial and administrative ideas to support the work of United Methodist congregations across the connection.
Recent issues have highlighted a variety of topics. “Basic Considerations for Your Church Promo” helps congregations reflect authentically on their outreach. “Health and Meetings: What to Consider When Planning an Event” offers specific guidance, especially in light of COVID-19. “Five Tips to Protect Your Ministry from Ransomware” counsels on avoiding cyberattacks. And “Infringement: Did You Know?” provides valuable advice from GCFA’s Legal Services Team on copyright laws.

Amy loves helping her parents rake leaves or shovel snow. If she does an extra-good job, they pay her. Ben’s favorite spot is the kitchen. He bakes yummy bread and cookies to surprise his family. Sometimes, people hire him to bake birthday cupcakes.
With her money, Amy might buy a book from her favorite series. Ben might buy a video game. They might save their money for something that costs a lot or save it for college. They might buy something for someone special.
If you get money for doing jobs at home or for birthday gifts, do you spend it right away or do you save it? Either answer is right. The important thing is to spend money wisely and to share with others.
Offertory Prayer
Loving God, guide the lay and clergy leaders who oversee the administrative work of our church. Remind us to support, recognize and appreciate their important role. We love you. Amen.
From Discipleship Ministries: Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost — Renewing and refreshing God, fill our thirsty souls with your living water! As Jesus promised to the woman at the well, and as Jeremiah reminded the prophets, this water is ours if we keep our focus on you and don’t chase after other gods. May the offering we make this day mark our commitment to keeping our eyes and our hearts set on a closer walk with you. We pray in the name of Jesus, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. Imagine managing a household without a budget. A big utility bill or unexpected health care expenses could mean shopping for groceries, finding yourself short of funds in the checkout lane and wondering how you will feed you and your family.
Now imagine a global denomination of more than 10 million members neglecting the costs of the very things that make it tick. General Conference delegates would not gather to help determine the church’s future. The Judicial Council would not decide important matters of church law. The General Council on Finance and Administration would not manage the finances and operational needs of the denomination. And the General Commission on Archives and History would not keep alive the history of The United Methodist Church and its predecessors.
