Action Alert: Oppose the Laken Riley Act - Stand for Justice and Compassion

The U.S. Congress is considering the Laken Riley Act, legislation that mandates the detention or deportation of undocumented individuals accused of theft-related offenses without due process, and allows states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for enforcement failures.

This bill has already been passed by the U.S House and is now headed to the U.S. Senate. While presented as a measure to enhance public safety, this bill risks unjustly targeting immigrant communities, fostering fear and mistrust, and violating the principles of justice, compassion, and dignity that we hold as United Methodists.

As followers of Christ, we are called to welcome the stranger (Matthew 25:35) and stand with the oppressed. The Social Principles of The United Methodist Church affirms  “the dignity, worth and rights of migrants, immigrants and refugees, including displaced and stateless people,” UMC Social Principles, The Political Community, Basic Rights and Freedoms,  Section G. This legislation contradicts these teachings by perpetuating harm against vulnerable individuals and families.

Why We Oppose the Laken Riley Act

1. Harm to Immigrant Communities: This bill could lead to increased detentions and deportations based on accusations alone, disproportionately impacting immigrant communities and creating a climate of fear.

2. Contradiction to Christian Teachings: Scripture calls us to love our neighbors and advocate for the least among us. This punitive legislation does the opposite, criminalizing individuals without addressing root causes of migration or systemic inequities. Furthermore, it is not based on statistical data, judicial prudence, or justice.

3. Violation of Our Social Principles: The United Methodist Church calls for just and compassionate immigration policies. The Laken Riley Act undermines these values by prioritizing punishment over care.

Act Now

As people of faith, we must act to oppose this harmful legislation and advocate for policies that reflect God’s love and justice.

1. Contact Your Senators: Use this form to contact your senators, or use the following script when calling your senators: “Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I am a United Methodist from [City/State]. I urge Senator [Name] to oppose the Laken Riley Act. This legislation unjustly harms immigrant communities, contradicts our Christian values, and violates the principles of dignity and justice central to our faith. Please vote against this bill and advocate for policies that prioritize compassion, justice, and fairness.”

2. Spread the Word: Share this alert with your congregation, small group, or social media network. Encourage others to join in this critical advocacy effort.

3. Pray for Justice: Pray for our elected leaders, that they may choose compassion and justice over fear and division. Pray for immigrant communities, that they may find safety, welcome, and peace.

Together We Can Make a Difference

The Laken Riley Act does not reflect the values of justice, compassion, and inclusion that we are called to embody as disciples of Christ. By speaking out, we honor our faith and stand in solidarity with immigrant communities.

Thank you for being a voice for justice and a witness to God’s love.
