If there’s one thing United Methodists are known for, it’s church committees. For many active members of a local congregation, serving on a committee has likely been part of their journey.

Committees are more than just a practical tool for church governance—they are a reflection of who we are as United Methodists. Rooted in our values of connectionalism, democratic decision-making, and lay leadership, committees embody our commitment to fairness, transparency, and shared ministry. They also provide spaces for spiritual growth and leadership development, equipping members to deepen their faith while serving their church community.

When done well, committees shouldn’t feel like routine business meetings. Instead, they become sacred spaces where collaboration and discernment take place. As Christ reminds us, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them” (Matthew 18:20). A committee meeting grounded in prayer and purpose goes beyond “doing the business of church.” It invites the Holy Spirit into the conversation, helping members live out their shared mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

This series will delve into the many facets of church committees, exploring their roles, functions, and the types typically found in local congregations or charges. It will also offer insights on who should serve on these committees and provide tips for making them more effective and Spirit-filled.
